James Wan, born 26 February 1977 in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, is a Malaysian-born Australian filmmaker known predominantly for his work in horror. He moved to Perth, Western Australia at age seven, attending West Leederville Primary School and Willetton Senior High School, later studying at Lake Tuggeranong College in Canberra before earning a Bachelor of Arts in media from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1999. Wan co-created the *Saw* and *Insidious* franchises and created *The Conjuring* Universe, the highest-grossing horror franchise with over $2.9 billion. He also founded the production company Atomic Monster.
His feature directorial debut, *Saw* (2004), was written with friend Leigh Whannell, inspired by their dreams and fears. They shot a low-budget excerpt to pitch the film, with Whannell starring as Adam Stanheight. The film grossed over $103 million worldwide, leading to a franchise that became the highest-grossing horror series globally. Wan directed the first *Saw* and co-wrote *Saw III* (2006), serving as executive producer on subsequent sequels.
