He was raised in a Jewish household and remained culturally Jewish throughout his life. Donen described his childhood as lonely and unhappy, being one of the few Jews in Columbia and occasionally bullied by antisemitic classmates. Inspired by Astaire, he took dance lessons and performed locally. Donen's relationship with Kelly deteriorated during their final collaboration.
